Names, and how they have been entered:

If ‘Hebrew’ and ‘English’ names are known, then the Hebrew name has been entered in ( ) after the first name. If only the Hebrew name is known, then it has been entered under ‘First name’, without brackets.

Women’s names have been entered as follows:
Married
Maiden names are used when known: if not, the surname is left blank. (See Advanced search for best ways to search if maiden name is not known)
Single
If the headstone does not state ‘wife of’, ‘widow of’, ‘relict of’, then the person is listed with the surname as shown on the headstone.

How to search the database

Main search box
The best place to start is the ‘Search Database’ box found on the top left of each page.

You can search by using just the surname field, or just first name field, or by using both. Please keep in mind that spellings may differ and it is worth using alternatives (or advanced search) if you do not find the results you are looking for.

Using Advanced Search

From here you can search using a whole variety of criteria: Contains, Equals, Starts with, Ends with, Exists, Does not exist, Soundex of, Metaphone of.
Over these search fields:
Last name
First name
Birth year
Circumcision place [few entries in this field]
Circumcision year [few entries in this field]
Death place [few entries in this field]
Death year
Burial place
Burial year [few entries in this field]
Gender
Spouse’s last name [a married woman has been entered under her maiden name, using the search field Spouse’s last name will bring up the result if only her married name is known.]

Additional Search fields are ‘Other Events’: click the ‘+’ to display them and then you can search for entries with: Headstone Symbol or Icon. Naturalisation, Occupation, Will

At the bottom of the page there are further options:
Check box to show death and burial informatio n in search results
Check box to show spouse in search results

Search Results

The results are presented in a list showing last name, given name, date or year of birth when known, place of birth where known, and the person’s ID number (starting with letter ‘I’) on the database.

Click on the individual you are interested to see the full database entry for that person.

Browse 'Surnames'

Click on ‘surnames’ to view all surnames on the database, starting with your selected letter, or click on ‘see all surnames’ for a complete list of all surnames on the database with links to the individuals.

Browse 'Photos'

There are 3 sections under ‘Photos’ from the main menu.

To see general views of most of the cemeteries go to ‘Cemeteries’.

To browse all the headstone photos go to ‘Headstones by name’. The list is in surname order except where the last name is unknown, or where only the Hebrew name is known. Due to the large number of thumbnails and entries, this can take a while to load. Each entry contains a link to the individual and the data held on the database for that individual.

To browse all the headstone photos from a given cemetery, go to ‘Headstones by cemetery’ and select the cemetery you are interested in. Each entry contains a link to the individual and the data held on the database for that individual.

Abbreviations Used

Names
( ) around a name is for alternative spellings and/or Hebrew names.
[ ] around a name indicates it is a different name but known or implied from other sources.
(unknown) is used where the name can not be read and/or is unknown.
Inscriptions
…… indicates letters/words that cannot be read.
[x] means it looks like x but is unclear.

General Notes

ID numbers:
ID’s start with letter ‘I’ for Individual not number 1.

Period Covered
We have NOT included photos of headstones where the individual died after 1927.

Headstone Photographs
We did not 'enhance' the inscriptions by using chalk, shaving foam, or any other material; whilst such procedures might have created greater clarity, they could also have resulted in damage to the stones.

Hebrew Inscriptions
With over 900 stones, obtaining full and accurate translations would have delayed the project by six months to a year. A few of the more lengthy and complex inscriptions have been transliterated by fluent Hebrew readers. For the remainder, and where possible, we have attempted only basic information of name and date, not least where the English inscriptions were unclear or missing. As always, it is advisable that you check the information yourself.
